Adult Services

Speech, language, and swallowing disorders often arise following stroke, surgery, or traumatic brain injury (TBI) resulting from car accidents, sports related injuries, or injuries sustained during active military duty. Los Angeles Speech and Language Therapy Center, Inc. offers services to treat the adult and geriatric population. Services include:

Activities of Daily Living
Activities of Daily Living are common activities we perform on a daily basis. Skills include: demonstrating appropriate social skills, writing checks, reading menus, paying bills, taking phone messages, and solving everyday problems.

Pragmatic Impairment
Difficulties include: interpreting social environments and non-verbal cues, topic maintenance, selecting appropriate conversation topics, and employing appropriate speaking rate and vocal volume. Therapy focuses on improving pragmatic deficits to help with communicative efficiency.

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) Therapy
Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) uses electrical stimulation during dysphagia (swallowing) therapy for activation of muscles through stimulation of the intact peripheral motor nerves. The major treatment goals are to strengthen weak muscles and to help in the recovery of motor control. Patients exercise their swallowing muscles while simultaneously receiving transcutaneous electrical stimulation applied through surface electrodes attached to the skin over the anterior neck. The use of NMES is FDA cleared and proven to be safe and effective, particularly in stroke and deconditioned patients. Speech-language pathologists receive rigorous training and certification to ensure competency. We offer VitalStim© certified speech-language pathologists to treat clients with swallowing disorders.

Swallowing Therapy
Treatment improves swallowing functioning via head positioning, maneuvers, and control of various food and liquid consistencies.

Voice Disorders
Therapy entail instructing appropriate use of pitch, breathing and timing to deliver effective and effortless speech. Therapy includes education on vocal hygiene and health.

Voice disorders require a medical referral, typically from an ENT or other specialist.

Memory Impairment
Therapy improves short and long- term memory skills.

Reading Disabilities
Therapy addresses literacy deficits including fluency and comprehension.

Spelling Disabilities
Therapy improves letter-sound knowledge and phonemic awareness.

Writing Impairment
Treatment makes writing legible and functional for daily needs.
